The Architecture
The Jimoe House is an architecturally sophisticated piece of work by winner of the coveted PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects) Award for numerous Residential Buildings and Aga Khan Award 1998, Jimmy Lim. This building displays the intricate geometry of interesting roof planes one usually associates with the architect’s oeuvre. The house, a tour de force of imaginative siting and built on a land area comprising some about 15,000 square feet (1,500 square metre) and exterior landscaping garden comprising some about 7,513 square feet (698 square metre) with a total built up area of 8,799 square feet (818 square metre), stands poised above the steep spur of a hill in a suburb of Melaka.
The Design
The Jimoe House has been designed with cascade of levels run down the hill, with stilts lifting them off the ground to address the surrounding excellent views. Security is handled in a hierarchical manner, starting from the entry level at the upper road. The ground level houses a central staircore with piano stairs, a generous car porch that fits 4 cars and a laundry with interconnected maid’s quarter. The swimming pool is raised above ground to provide a breathtaking view of the city and allow the gentle sweeps of breezes in the evening to cool the house down. The first storey contains the living room, dining room and 2 kitchens with imported european joinery and kitchen appliances. The master bedroom and family room are located on the second storey while the other 3 bedrooms and an extensive study sit on the third storey. Every bedroom has a minimum of a 3-point ensuite and private balcony.
The Concept
The Jimoe House has been designed based on the Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya) aesthetics coupled with a contemporary approach to environmentally sustainable living. The construction utilizes careful choice of local materials, including the much priced Chengal which is used sparingly on the external cladding, exposed timber roof structure and flooring throughout the building. The Jimoe House is truly an outstanding piece of architecture that transpires the local traditional aesthetics while providing a relax and wonderful experience to live in.
